OVERVIEW

Belyounech is a small fishing village located 16km north of Fnideq and 7km west of Ceuta . Well hidden from eyes ,  the village is surrounded by green mountains and is dominated by the mass of Jbel Moussa . Also called in Spanish “La Mujer Muerta” because of its particular shape recalling the grace and forms of a woman extended . The history of Belyounech goes back to ancient times . Legends say that the ancients regarded the mountain of Jbel Moussa as the column of Hercules on the African side of Gibraltar.

BELYOUNECH : A PARADISE WITH HISTORY & CULTURE

The history of the village is also linked to that of the Islamic city of Ceuta, for which Belyounech represented a high place of pleasure in the Middle Ages, and thus allowed its inhabitants to make beautiful trips not far from their city. The famous judge and theologian Caddi Ayyad, had compared Belyounech by its beauty and its difficulty of access to Paradise. The Andalusian geographer El Idrissi described it as “a valley where fruit, lemons and even sugar cane were produced in abundance and where the water flowed everywhere and the pastures were excellent”. Seized by the beauty of the site, an Andalusian caliph of the tenth century had even built a large house where he liked to withdraw from time to time.

But Belyounech is also and especially the last beach of northern Morocco and one of the most beautiful of the Mediterranean coast. Its fine golden sand and turquoise water seduce all visitors and invite them to soak their feet in the cold water contrasting deliciously with the warmth of the sun on their skin . The place is also popular with scuba diving enthusiasts who take advantage of the transparency of the water to explore the fauna and flora of the Mediterranean bottoms. HOW TO GET TO BELYOUNECH ?

By plane, from the airport of Tetouan or Tangier , take a big taxi or rent a car to go there . Also , if you are in Fez you get in touch with our Fez guide who will take you there by a  4×4 car  which are preferred because the region is somewhat difficult to access by normal car, take the national road to Tangier (N16).

The period

May to September. The water being slightly cold, prefer warm and sunny periods. Avoid preferably school holidays and periods of great affluence for a change of scenery guaranteed!

WHAT KIND OF ACTIVITIES TO DO IN BELYOUNECH ?

Ascent of one of the mythical mountains of the region, the Jbel Moussa, also called Mount Atlas, which rises to 841 meters above sea level, and offers a nice getaway for hiking or climbing from the village of Belyounech.
